There are a number of special Bliss-characters within the Blissymbolic Language. These special characters are detailed below together with their meanings and why they are used.

Question mark + open: The question Bliss-character is placed at the start of a sentence to indicate that the sentence is a question.

Exclamation mark: The command Bliss-character is placed at the beginning of a sentence to indicate that what is being said is VERY important.

Minus + intensity: Used before a verb to create a negative sentence, for e.g. very dissappointed.

Combination of up and down: The opposite meaning Bliss-character is placed before another Bliss-character and indicates its the opposite of that Bliss-character, for e.g the opposite meaning placed before cold would mean hot.

Subtraction [half-sized]: Used to create a meaning with negative content.

Division [half-sized]: Used to create a new meaning, which is part of the meaning of the associated Bliss-character, for e.g, chapters can be a part of a book.

Blissymbol + part: Used to produce a new meaning, represented by a component of the associated Bliss-character.

Multiplication [half-sized]: Used to create a collective or quantitative meaning.

Horizontal reference line on midline + much/many + description indicator used to create the comparative.

Horizontal reference line on skyline + much/many + description indicator used to create the superlative.

Pictograph: Used to create a meaning based on the relationship between the dot and another Bliss-character.

Exclamation mark: The intensity Bliss-character is placed after the Bliss-character it intends to change the meaning of. The intensity Bliss-character is often regarded as VERY or REALLY.

Mouth + many: Used to create a Bliss-character representing a category or class. For e.g, to represent furniture we would say many chairs and tables, hence the Bliss-word furniture is made up from the Generalisation character, the chair character and the table character.

Combination of to speak and flower and earth: Used to create a meaning that is not to be taken literally.

Arrowhead: Used to create a meaning by indicating in detail or a particular location on an associated Bliss-character.

Used to divide component of Bliss-characters to clarify meanings.

Addition [half-sized] on earthline: Used to create a meaning based on association.

Same + sound: Used to create a homonym of an associated Bliss-character.

Similar + sound.

Similar sound + end: Used to create a meaning through rhyming with an associated Bliss-character.

Similar + eye.

Two interlocking circles [quarter-sized]: Combine indicators are placed before and after a Bliss-word created by a Bliss-user which is not an approved Bliss-word. The use of these combined indicators delimits the character sequence and indicates that the combination should not be regarded as an approved Bliss-word.
